Leila Heller Gallery To Exhibit at Art Beat - Istanbul
September 14 – 18, 2011

Opening Preview, September 13
Lütfi Kirdar Convention and Exhibition Centre

New York, NY- Leila Heller Gallery will present a solo exhibition of Turkish artist, Kezban Arca Batibeki at the first edition of Art Beat-Istanbul. The exhibition will be comprised of seven new works from Batibeki’s Twilight Series. Art Beat-Istanbul is a new contemporary art fair that coincides with this years 12th Istanbul Biennial and will be a new podium for Turkish and International galleries. The fair will exhibit twenty-seven galleries and will welcome international dealers to the lively contemporary Turkish art scene in Istanbul.

Batibeki’s seven new paintings from her Twilight series explore a use of mixed media, including collage and embroidery. By using vibrant colors, kitsch materials, and flashy sequins, Batibeki’s paintings are undeniably eye-catching. The new series continues the theme of Batibeki’s Pulp Fiction works, mainly focusing on women as figures stuck in an endless battle between other women, very much mirroring life itself. The works explore the common theme of femininity, pervasive in all her work, through the juxtaposition of the natural feminine physique with its surrounding natural environment. Each image depicts a vital contrast between female liberation and oppression that exemplifies Batibeki’s unique thematic expression.

Batibeki will also present one new video, which will explore the relationship between the mediums of painting and film, bringing her painted subjects to life in moving image.

Kezban Arca Batibeki was born in Istanbul, Turkey, where she currently lives and works. Her versatility is seen through different art mediums including painting, installation, short film, and photography. Her first solo exhibition in the United States, Pulp Fiction: The Sequel, occurred in 2010 at the Leila Heller Gallery.

In addition to this solo exhibition, Leila Heller Gallery will also present a video by Iranian artist Shoja Azari, as well with a neon light installation by Turkish artist, Osman Akan at Art Beat-Istanbul.
